Shelburne Calico Garden

Windham Fabrics has partnered again with the Shelburne Museum to create Calico Garden.  This unique collection is based on a quilt by the same name from accomplished quilt maker Florence Peto.  Florence described the quilt in a letter to the museum in 1951, "It has always been my desire to preserve fascinating old fabrics."

Windham could not agree more with Florence and in this collection offer fine examples of interesting English and French calicos in eclectic colors ranging from poison green to cheddar and chrome yellows.

Florence Peto first collected and researched quilts as a hobby, but her interest in historical quilting traditions and techniques led her to develop this interest as a professional pursuit. She lectured to quilt groups and wrote magazine articles. Her two books, American Quilts and Coverlets and Historic Quilts, set a standard for historical research in the 1940's.

Not only has Windham faithfully reproduced some of the more interesting fabrics from Florence's project, but have also included a version of the original appliquéd quilt top. Like Florence Peto, Windham Fabrics maintains the desire to preserve the memory and identity of the quilt maker as well as her needlework.
